That decade was the first of two "lost decades" for the Montreal franchise. Though they won (an unexpected) Stanley Cup in 1986, Montreal was considered a team in their twilight.
The more Montreal struggles, the more the hillbillies amongst the analysts bellow and strut for simpler methods and for more crash-and-bang hockey.
