Montreal Mystique Numbers; the Charts, Graphs, Standard Deviations, Fractal Points and Icy Conclusions

Through the eighties, the New York Islanders and Edmonton Oilers along with the Philadelphia Flyers and Boston Bruins were considered the dominant teams.  That decade was the first of two “lost decades” for the Montreal franchise.  Though they won (an unexpected) Stanley Cup in 1986, Montreal was considered a team in their twilight.

A closer look at the regular season totals, however, shows that Montreal did not lose much.   Though Montreal was eliminated three times in the first round in 81, 82 and 83 and finished below 0.500 in 84, the team’s playoff results masked the reality; Montreal was still a top-three force to be reckoned with.

The link below shows a chart comparison of the top teams through the decade’s regular seasons.  The President’s Trophy is awarded to the top regular-season point-getter in the NHL.
