NHL on TSN Favours Weak Hockey
December 10, 2008, by Homme De Sept-Iles
The Sports Network (TSN) has announced a new Canadian initiative. But they may have failed to learn from the CBC’s (ostensibly accidental) pro-Toronto Maple Leaf leanings.
An announcement on the TSN website proclaimed boldly: “For the first time in network history, all regular season games will feature at least one Canadian team and will be available nationally in High Definition on TSN HD.”
From today til the end of the regular season schedule (Apr 8, 2009) here are the numbers (in terms of Montreal and Toronto ratio):
Total NHL Games on TSN: 47
Total NHL Games featuring Montreal: 11
Total NHL Games featuring Toronto: 12
Isn’t it interesting that the team that won the Eastern Conference last season (Montreal) and finished third overall in the NHL is featured less than a team that missed the playoffs last season and finished 24th overall?
Montreal is currently fifth overall in the NHL while Toronto is 27th.
This is akin to the NFL announcing their Monday night schedule and proudly trumpeting that the Detroit Lions and Cincinnatti Bengals will be featured in a few more games than the New York Giants and New England Patriots.
I thought true hockey fans wanted to see quality hockey. If a fan of a bad team wants to see more games featuring their team, hey, that’s what the NHL Centre Ice Package is for.
Here are the extended numbers:

TOR: 3
February
