The Game Goes On

March 16, 2009, by Homme De Sept-Iles

(maudlin, sentimental, overly involved … say what you will, think what you may, there is no denying the passion … and there’s nothing I can do about it, anyway)

For Guy Carbonneau there are a lot of pluses.

The game goes on. But the play remains the same.

Guy Carbonneau will buy another tie. He will likely coach another game in the NHL. He is not out there looking for sympathy.

But this is one of the things I observe. And this is one of the subjects I write about. And yes, I am going to be sensitive about it.

I cried over a game today. That’s how someone a bit more cynical might say it. Someone who considers themselves a bit more mature.

I feel the need to explain myself. But I don’t feel like doing it yet again.

Why do people dismiss, disparage, minimize or otherwise denigrate the sports fan’s relationship with his team?

What are they missing? What don’t they understand?

“The blush is for those who wouldn’t understand.”

Life is a blue-green saturn-ball of narratives (rings and things, too).

I vote, I help with my sister’s baby, I work full-time in a care industry. I don’t expect my girlfriend to be barefoot or pregnant. I’m “in my forties”. I get it.

And when I think of Guy Carbonneau’s firing, I see a Sept-Iles swirl of concrete, gull skies and hockey dreams. In the five pm evening clouds of a seaboard mining summer, fairness and fun are all orange sun setting flameball and ending pride.

It isn’t fair. And yet I understand it. That is the conflict.
