Montreal Mystique Interviews Lorna Jackson Part Two of Two
September 20, 2009, by Homme De Sept-Iles
Montreal Mystique spoke at great length with author and University of Victoria professor Lorna Jackson. Jackson spoke on a breadth of topics including the state of hockey today, culture and sport, her father’s love of the Canadiens (and Lorna’s youthful love of the Bruins) and, of course, her beloved Canucks.
Jackson’s views and theories on hockey will challenge, startle and intrigue fans of the cool game. A unique and passionate voice, the accessible Jackson is both a student and professor of the game. Her conclusions and wonderings shift hockey from mere entertainment to a self-reflective tool and an exponent of society itself. This is the second of a compelling and thought-provoking two-part interview.

Jackson Facts
“Lorna Jackson’s honest love of the sport earns her the right to see it with surgical eyes, and lay the game bare with her trademark wit. Touched by brilliance, these are the fresh as can be, with not a post-game cliché to be found – and yet there’s something here as warm and familiar and trustworthy, and Canadian, as wool socks in the drawer. She’s no mere spectator; she’s a player.”
- Bill Gaston
A classically trained vocalist who sang country in British Columbia pubs for ten years, Lorna Jackson brings a range of life experiences to her teaching and to her craft. Her respect for people and for the game comes through in her work and in her words while her insights and critques can be as sharp as her personality is warm.
She is the respected author of Dressing for Hope, A Game to Play on the Tracks, Cold Cocked: On Hockey and her most recent work, Flirt: The Interviews in which she creatively creates mock interviews which ask the sort of questions we all love hearing answered.
Jackson instructs creative writing at the University of Victoria and lives on Vancouver Island. She is an intrepid Canuck fan who will brave wind, water and key free agent losses to support her team in person. And she respects the Habs.
