The Diachronic Barber Pole Observations of a Recovering Hockey Exile

Les Canadiens Today

The Story So Far …

The respected Doctor Rick took time from his taxing intellectual pursuits and guested for us today via email. He is based in Montreal.

It seem only a short time ago that the CH could look ahead to a possible middle-of-pack placing.

Let’s look at what’s coming up behind Le Bleu-Blanc-Rouge:

  • Montreal is tied for 11th place with the New York Rangers and Islanders, which have two and one game in hand, respectively.
  • Philadelphia is one point back with three games in hand.
  • Toronto and Tampa Bay are two points back with two and three games in hand, respectively.

My old pals CF and DB, (who will remain anonymous for now), could easily apply a Taylor series or Fourier analysis to the numbers above, but let’s haul out our Doom-and-Gloom Crayola crayon set (64 shades of grey and black) and draw a picture. It’s safe to speculate that 14th spot is a distinct destination for Martin’s boyz. Alright, 13th since Philly’s season is in dire need of some Kevorkian medicine. HDS will probably put my crayons away and remind everyone that eighth is only two points away. That’s where the problem lies, the centennial’s redemption (aka playoff appearance) is right there but the team is as predictable as a bipolar hermaphrodite!

I don’t think Bob spent his money wisely-the three major signings this summer take up a lot of cap space and perhaps this reflects on the depth and quality of the free-agent players available this summer. Mind you, Philly is no better. Above and beyond any of this is the obligation that Bob has to sign Plekanec ASAP. Dumping big George is a must (there’s an extra $1.5M). In addition, Timmins’ apparent inability to properly scout and draft talented impact players is evident when you analyze what’s in the recycle bin in Hammy. The new coaching staff should help but you won’t win at Daytona in a Yugo, right?

Enough rambling.
