Bob Gainey May Step Down

February 8, 2010, by Homme De Sept-Iles

My sources say that Montreal Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey may be stepping down.  The Canadiens have announced a press conference to take place at 4PM today.  Team President Pierre Gauthier will take over as the interim general manager.

If it is true, it is the end of a seven-year era which saw Gainey rebuild a franchise that had missed the playoffs for three straight seasons and struggled to score goals.

Gainey restored the team’s dignity and (re)established a culture of progressivity, compassion, skill and speed.

The team qualified for the playoffs in four of five full seasons, finishing first in the Eastern Conference and third overall in the NHL in 2007-08.  The team currently sits at sixth spot in the conference.
