Football is for fanatics. Hockey is for historians.
these figures appear on the landscapes of every field
in war, we have fools, despots, the courageous and those who seek integrity
this is true
in politics
in business and day to day life
and in games
bob gainey is a visionary figure
often witholding his thoughts
but through his actions we see
we saw what he meant, what he admired
what he imagined and where he failed
what he hoped against ego and logic
to endeavour
to achieve
prophecy, vision or their colloquial nephew, genius
are words that divide, are ideas that divide
to suggest that there are such figures amongst us
is to invite, from some,derision, denial, dismissal
it also invites from others, agreement, understanding and resonance
and history, a genuine, purposed historical study
does show who the true luminary or visionary figures were
why is bob gainey visionary?
how was he vulnerable?
where did he hope against hope?
how did his tenure enrich our experience as observers of this game?

To go through what he has and to remain so stoic… I would be a mess. Bob deserves a long and amazing vacation. He will always be one of my favourites.
