Montreal Canadiens vs. Boston Bruins

Musings and In-Game Scribbles
My English is as good as yours, I just write these in a stream-of-consciousness mode that I insist excuses me from small things like rules of grammar or general etiquette. Let’s call it conversational English, hopped up on beans. You know what kind of beans (no, Carl Mellesmoen, not the magic ones).

Game Twenty-One (score posted following scribbles)
Missed it? Musings capture the game in writing. A written transcript typed during the game, posted and edited about thirty minutes afterward. Based on the RDS French telecast of the Montreal Canadiens game, Musings take about 20 minutes to read. More detailed than an article, fresher than a looping highlight and good with morning coffee. Or late-night chocolate. A unique way to re-experience the game.

Since losing to the Montreal Canadiens in back-to-back tilts on October 27th and 29th, the Bruins have won eight straight; including their most recent win over New York Islanders 6-0 on Saturday night.
In other Monday night news, Crosby has scored on the first shot of his first shift of his first game back.
He’s not Mario, though. Sorry. And maybe it wasn’t the first shift.
He’s very good. Crosby, the Penguin captain and most celebrated Canadian hockey player today is back from his long layoff due to two concussions suffered earlier this year. He’s very good and was great at the time of his unfortunate injury.
The Bruins’ wins, like Rangers before them, were over weaker opponents. But wins against weaker lings are certainly better than losses against same.
Carey Price and Tim Thomas are the goalies. Price was named NHL player of the week.
Refs are Wes McCauley and Dean Morton. All four officials exchange daps and act as if they merit admiration.
First Period
Nokelainen, Palushaj and Darche start, defensive line.
Puck stays on the perimeters. Finger Ference starts out. Short pass to Bergeron. He’s shoved off the puck by Gorges. Subban carries down the unaccustomed left side and dumps it in.
Plekanec, Gionta and Cammalleri are next. One entry and lost quickly.
Chara hears the boos every time he carries. Houde says that he feels no need to name Chara; the crowd lets us know every time he has it. But Lucic receives some boos on entry on the right.
So scratch that.
Desharnais, sudden across the crease, falls and can’t backhand. Tempting entry.
Gomez, Moen and Eller.
Peverley lean-sweets a shot. Bent knee and retained, all in front of the retreating defenceman.
Nokelainen intercepts and with three minutes gone, the full range of lines has appeared.
Corvo misses a puck and has to go back and get it. Palushaj, busy checking the defenceman is further away from the disc and can’t get to it. Momentum.
Emelin advances to keep a puck in play.
Plekanec. Space opens. Flanked, the centre has an opening. Mid-high slapshot.
Pacioretty is on the ice and the booing for Chara is much more pronounced. I’ve never heard the booing sound like this before. It’s pronounced, deliberate and a funnel of disdain. It’s deserved, of course.
Former Hab Pouliot with a nice move to the net. He’s tall. I forgot.
Crosby has another point. An assist.
Islanders. One of the poorer teams but not the last-place outfit we have gotten used to are nevertheless fodder for the three centres (Staal, Malkin, Crosby) reunited for the first time on the same night. First time in over 100 games.
Gionta’s shot is deflected and nearly a goal for Plekanec.
Just under fourteen left.
Price janitors one behind his net. He’s much improved in this aspect in recent weeks. A new dimension for the BC native.
Subban is called. Martin sighs but maintains some composure. Subban took the time to punch Brad Marchand in the face (glove on) while checking the short forward in the corner to Price’s left on a puck chase. Unacceptable penalty.
Thirty seconds and the Bruins can’t control. Corvo falls into the boards.
Two on one. Plekanec. To Moen. Misses the puck. Houde guesses the puck was bouncing a bit. Rondelle sautillant.
Seidenberg loses the handle on the right point. Bruins have to re-enter.
They do.
One pass. Another. Chara on the circle top and his shot is blocked. One of the most dangerous shots in the NHL. He’s won the hardest shot competition at the Skills Competition (All Star Weekend) more than once. His six nine height gives him torque that nobody else has.
Gill is six seven but his shot is not comparable. Gill remains out of the lineup. Infection of some kind.
Penalty ends.
Clearing pass for Cammalleri. Traffic. Tries to pass across the ice to Cole. Tangled up.
Montreal continues pressure. Weber fires. Stick breaks even as Thomas slips backward into the net like a small bear on an icy cave lip.
Corvo hobbled up after his collision and he’s set up for this faceoff. Number fourteen.
Some weird green Habs logos are held up near the bench area behind the glass. Three of them. Weird because they’re green.
Very homemade.
Fair enough.
Some ice damage is dealt with by a guy in a white Canadiens overall. The word bib comes to mind. He scrapes the ice even as Gionta half-yawns circling slowly and waiting for the faceoff.
Quick shot of Julien. I love that guy.
Ten and a half. Julien coached the Canadiens for a time and his decency is endearing and consistent.
Chara chop-dumps a pass as Gionta nears him behind the Bruin net.
Turnover at midice. Pacioretty. In on the right. Slaps at it as Tomas has sprawled. Long stick from under the end line. Puck is in the open area but no Habs are close enough.
Montreal ice. Lucic with a no-look pass for Krejci. Coverage. Houde says that the home team is playing as a fivesome (it looks better unhyphenated). Hermetique.
Desharnais. Cole. Point blank. Heavy wrister and Thomas is up and juggleglove saving.
Good cycling by Montreal on the sequence.
Whoom, a Hab is taken down on entry. A fine Adams Division hit.
Eller line. Eller. High shot moving at near top velocity. Thomas handles it. He’s playing as well as he ever has. We’ll miss his styleless style one day.
Emelin. Diaz. They share and move it out.
Gionta and Chara. Collide. Chara always lets the shorter Gionta hit him. Stays calm.
For a moment, I remember that I used to be fond of Chara.
Short Lucic bio by RDS; he was the MVP of the Memorial Cup win by the Vancouver Giants in 2007. He had 30 goals and over one hundred penalty minutes last season. Houde says that Lucic is a truly nice guy (gentile) and one needs to know him off the ice to understand this. Houde’s assessments are sharp and genuine and this gives me pause. Yes, I can see it. Some guys are nearly opposite off the field. Off the ice. Especially the monster defensive players.
Fair enough.
Stoppage. Diaz is on the right point with Emelin on the left.
That can’t be right. Emelin makes a nice play to stop one at the cage area and launches a good pass down the middle. Ok, I was a bit hasty in condemning Emelin on Wednesday.
Or was it Thursday. The slot blunder that cost a goal.
Another stoppage.
Marc Denis interviews Randy Cunneyworth on the carpet beside the bench. Cunneyworth talks in nearly technical fashion about what Montreal needs to do. May as well.
Delayed call.
Bruins swash across the ice. Finger. Shot. Wrister. Scores. Nice wrister, full follow-through and over Price’s left shoulder.
Boston 1, Montreal 0
He smiles and takes a sip on his bench.
Four and fourteen. It’s Ference’s second goal of the season.
Habs respond with a measured shift. Bruins seem to lose gas.
Subban should have been called on a bump-down of Gregory Campbell after the whistle. Campbell regains footing with no rancour. I suppose it was on the border.
We resume. Three minutes.
Bergeron. Carries across the blue with Subban in front of him. Shoots around the defenceman and Price traps and holds it high. Faceoff to Price’s right. Plekanec loses it. To the point. Puck slowly rivers its way to the net. Two near stick-ons but no shots.
Long puck. Icing. Montreal.
Malkin scored. Crosby. The Assist. Three points on three goals. Wow, says Houde. Chuckles in admiration.
Perhaps he’ll pick up where he left off (he was scoring at a Hart Trophy rate). But it’s an emotional night and maintaining that level of emotion is unlikely. In the meantime, in Washington, Ovie has failed to capitalize on Crosby’s absence. It was his chance to take back the perceptual flag. But now we’re going to hear all about Wayne Crosby all week. All month. All year. But hopefully not all century.
Ninety seconds.
Weber and St. Denis. Pacioretty, Desharnais and Cole.
They control. Bruins are lazing around. When and where have we seen this before. Finger ends all that and capts the puck behind his end line (c’est Francais). To McQuaid. They eventually, through one turnover and one-get-back manage to work it out and down. Bruins have it for three seconds and the Habs are back in the slot. Eller. Jams. Gomez there, too. Thomas is the towel. Pile of black and gold terry.
Remember Terry O’Reilly? Lunchpail and legs working, down and then up, snow sprayed on the face and later, blood. They must still love him in Boston.
One last Boston possession. Peverley’s turnaround shot is blocked.
Period ends with Kelly entering and Subban gliding close for a few words. Always trying to irritate.
Montreal led on shots 10-5. Kelly doesn’t take the bait.
First Intermission
Boston 1, Montreal 0
Crosby talk. Who wants to be the guy to hit him and send him back to IR? Fifteen games at least, jokes Crete. Brunet says that there is nobody else in Crosby’s category when Alain asks if Kane is as good (Patrick Kane or was it the captain?). Some Ovie talk; his slow start this season. He’ll be inspired by Crosby’s return I’d venture. Some concern about Crosby going too hard and re-injuring himself.
So much of greatness is desire. Crosby has all the raw skills and all of the desire. Only his frustration threshold has held him back. It won’t for much longer. We’re probably doomed.
Ovie has to match. And bigger and more exuberant and with a thicker skin, Ovie should deliver. But it’s a long career and anything can happen. Sometimes the word “and” must take precedent. And?
And.
Some first period highlights. Ference had advanced to the mid-slot and was in fine position, uncovered. Good find on the pass.
Brunet is so annoying.
For some reason, Ranger games bring out my verbosity more than the others (five grand). This Bruin musing will be back to the average length (four grand).
Coming into Saturday’s game against the Islanders, Boston was scoring 3.44 per game, good for top-five status. At their best, only Philadelphia plays better Eastern Conference defence. Maybe that statement is a bit dated.
Montreal won 71% of 14 faceoffs.
Second Period
Boston 1, Montreal 0
Houde suggests that Montreal can continue playing the way they are and the chips should fall into place.
Montreal ice.
Bergeron is a very smart player. Every shift.
Montreal exits. Cammalleri. Has self-created room. Fires but it’s mungled somehow.
Seguin for Krejci at the crease lip and the jam-in is a hop-over miss. Price got across. Cammalleri was stripped of the puck by Chara at the last second. Lifted his stick. Very nice.
Lines change. One minute gone. And fifteen seconds.
Corvo. Chased. Calmly passes it up.
Corvo is 34 and has all the tricks of an experienced defenceman.
It’s a good group in Boston. Led by McQuaid, Chara and Boychuk. Seidenberg is good, too.
All those Adams years taught me to respect Boston. And these post lockout days have done more of the same. Yes, they can be doltish. But every team has three or four.
I suppose I’d take Boston’s dolts over most of the others.
Thornton, Horton, Horton and Lucic are the more despicable of the B Dolts. Oh. And Finger. Fine, you can keep them.
Puck stays on the perimeters. Seguin ends that with a middle entry and windup boomer. Off the back boards to Price’s left.
He’s in his game-saver mode. He’s annoyed about the lost shutout. He’s had two in a row. Budaj played in between. A four-three loss to the Islanders on Thursday.
Price is good. Very good. Can he be great? I still wonder.
Long Montreal puck is called.
Cammalleri is on the ice. Chara for Boston.
The Bruins are calm, maybe too calm.
Boychuk shoots into legs off the draw.
Montreal loses the disc deep right. Pouliot is on the ice. Chara turns and retrieves and the crowd remembers to boo. Ordinary volume this time. Emotional levels. Hard to maintain. But the memories don’t fade as easily.
Cole to the net. One man on his arm. Loses control at the muzzle.
Thomas chops down and kneels to cover another entry shot.
All right. Let’s just score. Enough wine and cheese.
I know I warm best to the Kovalev vintage, slow burgundy but Cole’s beer board style is refreshing.
Subban. Baboom. Thomas. Eller with a shot. Misses the net. Crowd responds. The Bruins are sitting back.
Puck goes out of play. Shawn Thornton is on the ice to alleviate sleepy play.
Thirteen. And thirteen with the puck. One pass. Long puck. St. Denis. Three in. Cammalleri stops it briefly. Gionta covers. Pass from Plekanec to the crease. Nearly converted. Plekanec is hustling up to the left point to keep it in. Chara takes it under his hash, hears the boos and fires it long.
Montreal is back in. Desharnais line. Desharnais is nearly tripped chasing the puck deep. Broken stick. Boston is compromised. Cole eliminates Bergeron. Bergeron climbs back up. Cole is looking for Bruins. Unafraid and strong. Boston survives the sequence and Ference keeps a puck alive on the left point.
Boston can’t and maybe doesn’t want to control. They’re easing off the throttle even more. Maddening habit for their fans, I’m sure. It’s disappointing, really. Boston could have done more in the past five, six seasons. The Flyer debacle occurs to me, suddenly. Boston was up three games to none and made a third page of history by losing that series.
I shake my head. It shouldn’t’ have happened. The 09-10 season. Laviolette was great in that series. Flyers believed. Bruins corrected it next season, true.
Didn’t they.
Stoppage.
Nine.
Horton with a smooth pass to the high slot.
Puck goes out of play.
Three points separate first from fifth in the North East division.
Nos Canadiens are last.
Subban is swearing and glaring. He’s brash. And annoyed. Will he grow into the style? Or with the style grow into him?
That’s PK Subban. But let’s see.
Plekanec and Brad Marchand. Separated behind the action. Plekanec was angry and had dropped the gloves. Denis chuckles a bit.
Moen slams Campbell into the corner boards.
The coach’s son. We never liked him. Except Ray. He could play. Ray Hostland.
But for the most part, coaches’ sons are hard to take.
Maybe that’s a bit harsh.
Six.
Emelin. He can hit, boy.
He’s not afraid. Pouliot hooks in response. Really stupid response by Pouliot says Houde. He adds that he’s sure that Julien thinks the same. I have to agree. I like Pouliot but he should have kept his stick to himself. Legit check.
Montreal man-advantage. Crowd jeers the former Canadiens forward.
The game was going nowhere. And now Montreal might wake up.
Gomez. End line. Light, accurate pass to the crease. Gomez watches the replay on the sore clock. Gionta jammed and jammed. And kept his balance. He’s so strong.
No goal.
If you were wondering.
Faceoff to Thomas’ left.
Plekanec a blast. Wide. Pass to the crease. Missed. Plekanec keeps it in. And his shot nearly spits stars.
But the Bruins clear. Puck goes up and out of play on entry. One eleven in the penalty.
Desharnais.
Darche. Diaz on the blue.
Pacioretty.
They work it.
Subban’s reception is made a bit difficult. Boston clears.
Forty.
Pacioretty swipes it in.
Bruins are sticks across and the square folds and bends enough to end openings.
Slime bubbles.
Penalty ends.
Under four.
Gorges. Taps a puck and walks away with it. Long pass. Chara has it. Lines change.
Gomez. Weber leads the big Cole. On the hash. Bruins are to it first.
Nathan Horton. Around the Montreal net. Bumped. They continue. Around it goes. Into Bruins ice. Cleared back. Icing.
Cole and Gomez leave the ice.
I don’t like this tinkering with lines in a one-goal game. Let the players work out some of the problems.
They’ve been working hard. So why punish them?
Maybe I’m wrong.
Ninety seconds.
St. Denis advances and shoots. Too much individualism on that play.
Subban is hit in the face. Pouliot. Hit Subban in the face with a stick. Julien holds back a holler. Reduces it to a mutter.
Oy yoy yoy.
This is Pouliot’s first game back in Montreal, no? No. The playoffs.
There was blood. Four minutes. What a disaster for Boston.
Gomez wins against Chris Kelly.
Gomez from the end line. Thomas traps the shot. Or was it a shot-pass?
No. It was a shot. Surprise.
Gomez on the draw deep right. Campbell loses it.
They control. Cammalleri
Forty seconds. Gomez and Chara collide and Gomez wins the joust. But the puck is out. Gomez is looking like his old self these past two games. His really old self. Good to see.
Eight seconds. Shot. Cleared. And the period ends.
Shots on goal were tied at 8.
Second Intermission
Boston 1, Montreal 0
Emelin highlights. I’ll give him this, he can hit. Seems more at ease, says former Montreal captain Vincent Damphousse. A hit on Pouliot, legit, upended the lanky forward on the Montreal end boards. Emelin doesn’t count on great velocity for the hit, rather he finishes with full contact, really pins his guy to the boards. Some open ice hits, too. And some blocked shots.
So. I’ll leave well enough alone.
The highlights music hasn’t changed in years. Droning Stratocaster updates.
Crosby has another goal. Four points and a five nothing third period lead against the Islanders.
Great return for your buddy Sid.
Washington GM George McPhee said on Twitter that head coach Bruce Boudreau would lose a vote of confidence. Caps coach is under fire. Or maybe McPhee was saying that he was giving a vote of confidence. Gad. But why? It’s such a long season. They started fine. They’ll right the ship.
Third Period
Boston 1, Montreal 0
Two and forty in the penalty.
Delayed offside. Cole touches it.
Faceoff to Price’s left.
Bergeron wins it. Cole takes it away at the blue. Cleared and Habs have to reset.
Weber.
Medium pass to Plekanec.
Precise. The passes are good.
Just under two. Subban with a one-timer. Hits something and is still on net.
Gomez. Good stop by Diaz at the blue. Cammalleri. Shot. Thomas.
Ninety seconds.
Habs do everything they can to keep it in and it works.
Great guile and desire.
Puck finally escapes. Ference is down on one knee. Up again. Is able to skate off with minor assistance from the official. Has to go to the trainer’s room. Not sure.
One oh four.
Officials huddle. They decide to drop the puck outside the blue. Montreal blue.
One oh one.
Puck rounds the boards. And leaves the zone.
Finally they set up.
Both teams reaching, diving and the puck is out.
Twelve.
Plekanec carries. Pass. Gomez with a fire and fur incursion. Thomas stonewalls it.
Penalty ends.
Three minutes gone.
Daniel Paille is wearing a cage. Took a Steve Staios shot to the face. Replay is shown. November 7th. Falling forward to block a shot. That’s brave. Or something.
Chara negates Cole in the neutral zone with a stick. Nice play.
Pacioretty is in. Two men and a wild shot goes nowhere.
Cole to Pacioretty. Waits. Is funneled to the end boards. Continues to work. Chara adroitly takes it way. To Lucic. Back into the Bruins zone. Chara waits for fresh troops. Launches the attack with a pass.
Bruins are a bit more inspired.
Six minutes and no goals. Markov.
Gionta to Cammalleri. Deflects. Gets there but the extra time saves Thomas. He’s across and gloving the bouncer.
Great look by Gionta. Cammalleri was open. The uncle-jam.
The hitting increases. Montreal. Bruins start responding. Gomez to the net. Lose balance. Bumps into Thomas. Back up. Eller struggles for long seconds with a Bruin and the puck.
It’s off his stick.
Bruins are starting to slow down again. Emelin separates Krejci from the puck.
Cole has it on the right. The crowd cheers expectantly. Speed. Fires. Rebound. Thomas has it.
Turnover. Cammalleri’s pass across the slot is intercepted.
Canadiens control but St. Denis’ long incursion results in a turnover.
Subban fakes a shot and passes right down the column. I like the notion. No shot results.
Old and canny. Can we have him one more time? You know who.
Eller. Marchand. The tension rises. Good. Boston is good at taking penalties.
Emelin was wiped out by Marchand. NO animosity resulted.
Emelin. Hmmmm.
Plekanec is asked to leave the circle.
Cammalleri loss it to Peverley.
Plekanec, Gionta and Cammalleri.
Passes are long and the Canadiens have to reset. Subban turns all the way back from the red line.
Cole is punching it. The clock, the cards, the hockey galaxy. Big gap on this entry and shot.
No shot or goal.
Cole is swearing and yelling at a Bruin as he leaves the ice.
We shouldn’t have to see commercials. Or we should vote for the commercials we like most. Budweiser. Fuck off.
At this point in the musing, only hard core Bruin fans might be left.
All fuck off means is go away. Or life off. After all, to have sex is to procreate. No?
Life you.
Ten minutes.
No call.
Moen hits Seidenberg hard. For what that’s worth.
Gomez. Eller. Moen trailer. Backhand.
Wide.
Nice entry.
Subban. Short pass for Plekanec. Turnover. Gorges. Around his net. Left for Subban. Turnover. Shot. Price stops it.
Action gets molecule fast.
Long Montreal puck. Icing.
Shots on goal are 23-19 for Montreal. Crosby’s return is over. Two goals, two assists in a five nothing win over Islanders.
Eight.
Cole. Over the right side. Ginger. Bounces over sticks. Bruins are in alone in response.
Lucic. Point-blank. Price stops it and looks left then finds it right. Great save.
Price is pretty good, isn’t he.
Kelly hits the outside of the post.
Loud ting.
Eller. Right side. Offwing. Shot. High. Gloved and held by Thomas.
Montreal pressures, Cole with a rush down the right. One hand, snow sprays, he nearly forces the puck across but a diving Bruin is low and the puck goes to the end boards.
Price dabbed Cole’s face with a towel at the bench during the TV timeout. Hard-working man. I like the gesture. I like the message for the others.
Four and a half.
The rest respond. Cole is leading this team.
Again, what a great addition.
Moen with an all work effort around the crease. Moen and Chara exchange some hard words.
Moen whacked Chara after the play with his stick.
I guess you knew that.
His stick.
Three and fifteen.
Robust. Bergeron. Chara. Plekanec. Marchand. It’s all ice and boards and the crowd is quiet and fearful. For Montreal.
Seguin and Marchand are across offside.
Faceoff outside the Montreal blue. Desharnais. Horton wins it. Around the net. Subban pokes it up. Moen. Cole, I mean. A Bruin falls. Seidenberg has it low. Bruins are to the net. It’s on the boards. Subban with a lame check attempt. Standing by the phone booth. Behind his net. Not the Kovalev phone booth.
Peverley knocks down a man. Interference.
Montreal man advantage.
Cammalleri was crosschecked in the back by Peverley, low slot to Thomas’ left. Thought he could get away with it. Bu someone saw it.
Some kid with his Hab jersey up and stomach shown is a bit much.
One thirty eight.
Campbell against Desharnais. They confirm the clock.
Desharnais wins it. Bergeron hops on it and clears it.
Price stops the slow puck.
Habs set up. One shot. Bruins have it. It’s lost. Cole deflects it into Thomas. Price is gone. Puck stays in the folds of his jersey. Pacioretty whacked it.
Boychuk tried to chop wood but missed Pacioretty after the play. Or was close.
Timeout. Julien is calm. Thomas is also calm. Like a bartender.
One oh two.
Cunneyworth draws it up.
Cammalleri. Talking with Pacioretty. Habs lose the draw. Reset. Cammalleri. From the hash. Pass is behind. And it’s out. Forty
Puck is cleared. Just misses the net. No icing. Twenty.
One last try. Pacioretty carries backhanded. Offside.
Energy is gone says Houde.
Faceoff outside the blue. Eleven point four.
Another timeout. Boston called it this time.
Sharp angle shot. Cole pushed it in. Desharnais shot it.
Period ends.
Gionta shot it.
Close.
There were men. Cammalleri. Pacioretty. Hit Pacioretty’s skate.
Final Score
Boston Bruins 1
Montreal Canadiens 0
April Wine. Tuukka Rask. Yes?
HDS Stars: Patrice Bergeron, Zdeno Chara, Erik Cole
RDS Stars: Tim Thomas, Carey Price, Alexei Emelin
Old and canny. And from Togliatti.
