Being Black, Being Ovie

Often, these students are simultaneously affirmed and devalued as Black students and both included and isolated in classrooms. A Black student constantly wonders if and how race is operating in her daily treatment, which can have negative psychological and academic effects.”
There are 399 Canadian players in the NHL.
There are 25 Russian players in the NHL.
One of them is Ovie.
Canadian stars are anointed, applauded, forgiven, pushed and expected to be the best. Even when it’s clear they’re not.
There are no Russian head coaches. There are no Russian media members.
There is only one Ovie. One Washington. One Dale Hunter.
What environment exists for this once-joyful Chocolate Bar Superstar?
I wonder.
